The RVC project team recommends that the districts utilize Wikispaces for course content management. As Laughton (2011) suggests, wikis provide a formidable alternative to course management systems, because they are "more flexible and easy to customize" (p. 234).
Wikispaces enables users to:
Build an unlimited number of wikis
Embed images, videos, and audio clips directly into the page
Embed links into documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations
Connect with many websites
Utilize an integrated help menu
Participate in training options including webinars, wikis, and videos
Access via mobile devices including Android, iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone
Set up central administration options
Choose from a variety of privacy settings and login options
Count on superior reliability, security, and customer service
Wikispaces provides hosting services and does not require any hosting by the districts. The project team recommends that the RVC purchase the Wikispaces Private Label Plan designed specifically for K-12 school districts for $4,000 per year for an estimated 350 users. It is further recommended that a three-hour technology training be provided to instructors and support staff as well as intermittent refresher training as needed. Students should also be provided with a short tutorial prior to use of Wikispaces.
